Joyland
by Stephen King

View in Library Catalog

While more of a who-done-it than a supernatural thriller, this story does embody both. I think King’s gift is being able to tell a story about everyday people and everyday events so wonderfully that when you get to the weird stuff, it just seems to make sense. But most of this story is about a college boy on spring break after the love of his life breaks up with him, and how a small-time amusement park saves him while he helps save the park. Excellent read!

Time to Scatter Stones
by Lawrence Block

View in Library Catalog

While I like Lawrence Block, I listened to this book on CDs and I may have preferred to read it. It was performed by the author, who does not have the best, most inflective voice for bringing a story to life. This is an odd story (not unexpected for Block) about a retired cop and retired prostitute that get married. In this story the wife is attending a support group for working girls who got out of the life and one of the girls in the group comes to her with a problem she is having with a man who won’t leave her alone. The retired detective steps in to help but there is much description of the life of a prostitute and readers need to be prepared for this.

India, the nanny, takes the job with a wealthy family, mostly because she has lost her mother to dementia and her best friend. The family has a secret. The parents are strict and rigid with the 7 year old charge, Alicia. However, she warms to India. India gets close to their son, and the mystery unfolds, verrrry slowly. Although there were some surprise twists, I felt it moved slowly.
